A delegate of three faculties from the School of Political Science and Economics of Tokai University, Tokyo Japan, conducted a courtesy visit to the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS) on 8 March 2024. Dr Fox Hu Zhiyong, Acting Head of SSPS, and Dr Anita Chan Kit-wa, Associate Head of SSPS, and Dr Lawrence Ho Ka-ki and Dr Norman Cheung Kin-wai from the same department had an hour of in-depth discussion with the Japanese visitors. During the meeting, administrative colleagues from SSPS responsible for overseas field-based learning, internship and student exchange programmes also exchanged opinions with visitors.

Dr Hu and student representatives Mr Jay Chung and Mr Cater Liu expressed their gratitude to Professor Fujimaki Hiroyuki, Dr Ryuta Wada, and Dr Arata Hirai from Tokai University for hosting several lectures on crisis management and Japan Society on its Tokyo campus for 30 students from the Bachelor of Social Sciences Global and Environmental Studies (BSocSc (GES)) programme. These lectures were part of the Overseas Field-based Learning (OFBL) trip organised for the BSocSc(GES) students in December 2023. Encouraged by the success of last winter’s experiential learning tour, SSPS and the visitors discussed further possibilities to consolidate and institutionalise their collaboration.

Both sides had genuine exchanges of ideas in the hour-long meeting, and reached a consensus about expanding the fields of collaboration to include Sustainable Development and Growth (SDG) and public policy studies. Both parties have also agreed to promote closer cooperation in the upcoming academic years in a number of areas. These include mutual instalment of guest lectures in international relations studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; joint-organisation of theme-based public policy research workshop for academic publication and knowledge transfer; provision of scholarship for postgraduate students to participate in summer schools and the arrangement of short-term field visit and internship for SSPS students in Tokyo.

Both parties from SSPS and Tokai University enjoy genuine exchanges of ideas in the hour-long meeting. The two sides reach an agreement about further collaboration.

“We are glad to have discussed with Professor Fujimaki Hiroyuki, Dr Ryuta Wada, and Dr Arata Hirai on various matters relating to closer cooperation. Tokai University’s School of Political Science and Economics has strong research teams in Sustainable Development and Growth, and public policy studies, particularly in the fields of environmental technology and disaster management studies. By taking part in summer school courses, short-term field visits and internship activities arranged by Tokai University, our students will have the valuable chance to expand their academic horizons and build up their own international perspectives. These will become an important part of their learning experiences at SSPS,” Dr Hu said.

Last December, Associate Programme Leader of the BSocSc (GES) programme, Dr Lawrence Ho Ka-ki, led a group of around 30 students from the BSocSc (GES) programme to spend seven days on a learning trip in Tokyo, including a series of lectures given by Tokai University. Also from SSPS, Dr Norman Cheung Kin-wai, a trained climatologist who has been following climate change issues over the past two decades, helped coordinate the trip.
